Application of Adaptive Management to Address Climate Change
Related Challenges Offered by Collaborative Adaptive Management Network
(CAMNet)
Instructors: - Jennifer Pratt-Miles (Meridian Institute) - Kris Esterson (PBS&J) - Tom St. Clair (PBS&J) Objective: In this workshop participants will explore
the use of adaptive management (AM) to address different
types of uncertainty associated with climate change and
natural resource management and development of adaptation
scenarios to address related challenges.
Background: AM has been proposed as a method that
resource managers can use to identify and develop climate
change adaptation scenarios. However, AM’s utility in
addressing climate change issues is not yet fully understood
– as there have been no specific applications to date. In
this half-day workshop, participants will work in small
groups on example climate change problems to learn the
strengths and limits of AM to address these problems.
Participants will learn to define “adaptive management” as
distinct from “adaptation planning.” Participants will learn
to identify the types of uncertainty associated with climate
change and AM’s role in addressing these uncertainties.
Application of AM across landscape scales and planning
horizons relevant to rates of climate change will be
explained. Participants will be introduced to other
management approaches such as scenario-based planning, and
learn how there relate to climate change adaptation planning
and AM.
Workshop Benefits: At the conclusion of the workshop
attendees will be able to discuss emerging trends in climate
change adaptation policy and the role AM may play in
addressing these issues. Participants will be given time to
discuss the role AM could play in addressing the climate
change issues of their home organizations and establish
contacts with other AM practitioners. Participants will be
provided a list of contacts that are available to provide
assistance in the development and implementation of AM
programs.
ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED: The number of
participants will be limited to 24. Participants will be
enrolled in the order in which their registration is
received, but no later than June 18th.
