Course Guidelines

Covid-19 safety precautions:

In light of the latest CDC updates and guidance from UF health experts, we no longer require masks during in-person FMNP activities but welcome masks for those who wish to wear them and voice support for those who do.

Attendance Policy:

  • You cannot miss more than 4.75 hours (20% of the 24 contact hours) This is a FMNP policy and cannot be modified by the Instructor.
  • To receive certification, the 4.75 hours or less missed must be made up by completing an assignment of equal time and content. Approval of the Instructor is required.
  • If total hours missed exceeds 4.75 hours, certification is not possible regardless of material made up.
  • All absences should be discussed with the instructor in advance. In case of emergencies, please notify Instructor as soon as possible.

Classroom Presentations and Materials:

  • “Classroom” means we are in at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge Day 1; UF/IFAS Research and Education Center, Quincy Day 2; and Leon County Extension Office Days 3 and 4. It might be warm or cool inside the classroom, so please dress accordingly.
  • All students will receive a link to download the Course Manual as a PDF before the first class.
  • If you ordered a hardcopy of the Course Manual, you will get it in the first class.
  • If you did not order a hardcopy manual, bring a computer with a full battery charge to view your course material.
  • Pre/Post Tests and the Course Evaluation are electronic, so please bring a cell phone, laptop or tablet with internet access.

Locations & Times may change due to unforeseen circumstances. Although this rarely happens, it is the student’s responsibility to verify classroom and field information – check email before every class.

Course Time Schedule

  • Does not include travel time, except between AM & PM sessions.
  • Does Not Include Your Travel Time Before or After Class
  • Transportation & Lunches are not Included (except days when a van may be available)

Illness Precautions– Transmission Reduction Practices

  • If you have a contagious illness or you may have one, please stay home.
  • Any individual who is not feeling well should not come to class or field trips.
  • Student Carpooling is suggested when safe to do so and is up to students to arrange. We may have a van to sue some days (TBA).

On Your Own Homework Assignments are course activities that you complete on your own time prior to the assigned classroom or in-person field trip due date. During the due date classroom session, students will share their information with the other students.

    • Nothing is due on the first day.
    • Your in-class participation is very informal and brief (~3 to 5 mins); it’s more of a discussion than a presentation
    • All students are to turn in to the instructor a copy of brief answers to the restoration project case study and a copy or photograph or electronically provided link to their site design.
    • For these assignments, students are not required to discuss restoration projects that they themselves have conducted, nor do students need any previous experience. Actually, we expect some of the students will have little to no restoration knowledge or experience.
    • Students only need to have an interest in learning about natural wetlands, their functions, and ways that we can represent nature through restoration.

    Flexible Schedule:

    • The schedule times listed are as close as possible, but we need you to be flexible.
    • We probably will not get out early; however, we may run late due to unforeseen circumstances.
    • Course time schedule does not include your travel time (except between AM & PM classes).

    Food & Drinks!

    • Absolutely no “Styrofoam” containers; bring reuseable containers when possible.
    • Coffee and snacks will be provided in the morning, Bring your own reusable mug or cup.
    • Allowed in the classroom as long as you clean up after yourself.

Cell Phones are fine to use outside of class. Please don’t allow them to ring during classroom sessions or on field trips. Talk on the gadgets during break time, lunchtime, before and after class. Violators have to bring snacks to the hungry class the next day.

    Field Trip Items:

    • Always bring water in a refillable, non-single use container.
    • Wear: Clothes appropriate for the expected weather (breathable clothing, long sleeve, layers); long sleeves and pants recommended for protection from the sun, etc; appropriate closed-toe footwear.
    • Bring: Insect repellent, sun screen, hat, rain gear, lightweight long-sleeved shirt or jacket, any medication you require.
    • Optional Items: Snacks, sunglasses, field ID books, notepad and pen, binoculars, camera.
    • Be aware that typically you will be experiencing a variety of environments. For your comfort, you may want to bring a complete change of clothes, shoes, socks, and a towel.
    • Required: Wear closed-toe shoes. The field trails are not always level or easy to travel.
    • Temperatures may vary during our field trips—please, dress accordingly.
    • Don’t wear perfume/cologne or use perfumed soap/body lotion before going out in the field. This may attract more unwanted buzzing invertebrates such as mosquitoes, midges (no see ‘ems), and bees.
