Course Guidelines

Covid-19 safety Precautions:

In light of the latest CDC updates and guidance from UF health experts, we no longer require masks during in-person FMNP activities but welcome masks for those who wish to wear them and voice support for those who do.

Attendance Policy:

  • You cannot miss more than 8.00 hours (20% of the 40 contact hours) This is a FMNP policy and cannot be modified by the Instructor.
  • To receive certification, the 8.00 hours or less missed must be made up by completing an assignment of equal time and content. Approval of the instructor is required.
  • If total hours missed exceeds 8.00 hours, certification is not possible regardless of material made up.
  • All absences should be discussed with the instructor in advance. In case of emergencies, please notify the instructor as soon as possible.

Tips for Success
Class begins promptly at 9:30 AM; please plan to arrive on time, accounting for potential traffic during busy seasons. Bring your own notebooks and writing utensils if desired or use a laptop or tablet with the available public WiFi. Note that Mote Marine Laboratory is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Facilities include water bottle refilling stations and nearby restrooms.
• If you ordered a PDF curriculum, a link will be emailed to you. For printed orders, your copy will be at our first meeting.
• Dress comfortably for air-conditioned classroom sessions and be prepared for short walking tours across level ground within the aquarium and City Island.
• Attire for field experiences will differ—follow the guidelines provided here: What to Wear and Bring to Field Programs (https://mote.org/education/what-to-wear-and-bring-to-field-programs/)

Etiquette and Engagement
Learning is most meaningful when actively experienced, not passively observed. Bring your knowledge and life experiences to share, and approach each class with an open mind, ready to explore new ideas, concepts, and activities. Our diverse community, like a coral reef, thrives when we respect the varied backgrounds and strengths of our peers, instructors, and guest speakers. Preparing for lessons, fully participating in activities, and engaging with the program will help create a vibrant and supportive learning environment.

Independent Activities
The course includes self-directed assignments that must be completed before the next session. These may involve computer-based research, hands-on exercises, or self-guided field activities.
• Course resources and updates will be communicated via email: endlessoceans@mote.org.
• Additionally, joining the companion Google Classroom is strongly encouraged for organized access to materials and communication; instructions will be provided via email and on the first day of class.

Field Activities
Outdoor activities involve some level of risk, so prioritize safety and work within your comfort level to complete assignments. Directions for field trips and interpretive practices will be provided in advance. Participants must complete an FMNP Health Safety Form before the first trip. Note that field locations and times are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances; it is the participant’s responsibility to verify meeting details. Transportation and meals are not included.

Live Online Sessions
Attendance is required via Zoom at designated times for presentations, discussions, and activities. Ensure you have the Zoom application installed (https://zoom.us/), a reliable internet connection, a headset or built-in laptop speakers/microphone, a web camera, and a quiet location.
