Webinar Overview

The program and steering committees are excited to announce “A Community on Ecosystem Services 2021 Preview.” We would like to take this opportunity to engage with the ACES community on the vision and plans for ACES 2021; connect ACES to new communities with like interests; and highlight early career ecosystem services researchers. The program will have five sessions:

Session 1: ACES Intersections: Making Connections to Expand Our Community
Wednesday, December 16th from 10:00am–12:00pm EST

Please join us for a special session during which we will explore topics from several communities that have similar interests to ACES and for which there may be additional opportunities to further engage. During this session we will hear from expert speakers from the communities on Planetary Health and Natural Climate Solutions. The planetary health initiative is focused on the intersections between human disruptions to the environment and human health. The cross-disciplinary field has a dedicated journal The Lancet Planetary Health. Many of the objectives including assessing the changing environments impacts on people and the societal outcomes are highly relevant to the ACES community. Natural climate solutions focus on the biologic sequestration of carbon to mitigate the effects of climate change via a suite of best management practices. We anticipate the intersections between climate change science and management and the ACES community will only increase. After hearing from our speakers there will be time for questions and discussion.

Session 2: ACES Fellows Lightning Round I
Wednesday, December 16th from 1:30pm–3:00pm EST

A rapid paced series of presentations on a wide variety of ecosystem services research from our ACES 2020 Student Fellows. Each speaker will provide a 7-minute presentation of their research followed by questions and answers.

Session 3: ACES 2020 Pollinator Buzz – At Home Happy Hour
Wednesday, December 16th from 5:00pm–6:30pm EST

Dive into the hive with us for a discussion on the intersection of pollinators, conservation, ecosystem services and business. There will be supporting presentations on recent pollinator research activities and pollinator investment priorities.

Session 4: What’s Next: An ACES 2021 Preview
Thursday, December 17th from 10:00am–11:30am EST

Please join us for a special session introduced by program co-chairs who will talk about the state of the ACES community in 2020, provide the vision for the 2021 conference, and engage the community on topics and sessions for the 2021 conference (with live polling). We welcome two expert speakers during this session who will address some of the critical themes planned for the ACES 2021 conference: “Ecosystem Services and Wellbeing: Mental Health Benefits” and “Cultural Ecosystem Services: An International Perspective.” After hearing from our speakers, there will be time for questions and discussion.

Session 5: ACES Fellows Lightning Round II
Thursday, December 17th from 1:00pm–2:30 pm EST

A rapid paced series of presentations on a wide variety of ecosystem services research from our ACES 2020 Student Fellows. Each speaker will provide a 7-minute presentation of their research followed by questions and answers.

The webinar will conclude with a wrap up discussion from our conference co-chairs. We look forward to your participation!
