Call for Session Proposals
Submission Deadline: February 26, 2021
The ACES 2021 conference central theme is "Focusing on the Future of Ecosystem Services" with an emphasis placed on accelerating the use of ecosystem services for land and resource management and fostering the next generation of ecosystem service researchers and practitioners.
The Program Committee is seeking input from the community and invites you to assist with program development via the session proposal process. Special session topics and formats will be considered; we encourage organizers to consider the frontiers of ecosystem service research.
All ecosystem services related research and applications proposals are welcome; we especially encourage ideas on these topics:
- Ecosystem Services* in Action – land and resource management using ecosystem services, case studies encouraged
- Human Physical and Mental Health Benefits of Ecosystem Services – translation of ecosystem function to human health outcomes and valuation; mental health studies of ecosystem services
- Cultural Ecosystem Services – non-use ecosystem services methods and valuation
*Ecosystem services may be known as an alternative name (natural capital, ecological benefits, etc.) – terminology should not limit submission of ideas.
Steps to Develop a Session Proposal
- Define the purpose, focus and overarching message of the proposed session.
- Decide on your preferred session format (standard or panel) and invite the appropriate number of colleagues for this session type to present a diverse perspective.
- Confirm invited colleagues agree to register, pay and attend if your session is accepted.
- Write a session proposal using this template and use the online form to submit by February 26, 2021.
Session Format Options
All sessions are 105 minutes long with a 5-minute introduction window. ACES features two different session formats:
This format consists of a 5-minute session introduction and overview by the moderator, followed by five consecutive 20-minute talks (15 minutes per talk plus 5 minutes Q&A), with speakers submitting individual abstracts and generally using PowerPoint slides to display graphics emphasizing key elements, supporting details and in-depth information.
This format entails a maximum of five panelists. Sessions generally begin with an introduction by the moderator followed by panelists introducing themselves and describing their personal experience and perspective on the topic. The moderator then facilitates interactive dialogue amongst panelists to obtain different viewpoints using pre-determined questions before engaging the audience in Q&A. The session ends with a closing summary and panel recognition. Use of PowerPoint should be limited to no more than a few key slides to help the audience visualize the panel concept. One overall session abstract should be submitted, but panelists may also submit individual abstracts if desired.
Proposal Evaluation Criteria
Selection is based on content and expected level of interest, and the session's potential for generating useful results and dialogue among attendees. Preference will be given to sessions that are integrative in nature, and/or that communicate interdisciplinary science effectively to a broad audience.
Registration Required to Participate
Session organizers, speakers, moderators and panelists are expected to register and pay for the conference before September 10, 2021 to confirm participation on the program agenda. Conference organizers reserve the right to cancel any session if deadlines are missed by the session organizer and/or speakers. We strongly encourage attendance and participation in the conference beyond just this session.
Session Organizer Responsibilities
If your proposal is accepted, your responsibilities as a session organizer include:
- Invite and confirm appropriate number of speakers for your session with diverse perspectives to share their views on the specified session topic.
- Identify a replacement speaker if someone cancels.
- Serve as the primary contact for the session. We communicate with one official representative per session.
- Communicate participation instructions and deadlines to your speakers.
- Ensure speaker abstracts (or panel session abstract) are submitted by June 22, 2021.
- Confirm a moderator proficient in managing speaker timing and facilitating interactive dialogue by July 8, 2021. The session organizer often serves as moderator.
- Submit a completed agenda grid by July 8, 2021. After abstract submission closes, we will email you a template to fill in the final session title, moderator name, and speaker names with talk titles in the final order.
- Ensure all speakers register and pay to confirm participation by September 10, 2021.
