Wetland Systems for Water Pollution Control November 11-16, 2000 Grosvenor Resort Lake Buena Vista, Florida |
Hosted by:
- Center for Natural Resources - Soil and Water Science Department - Wetland Biogeochemistry Laboratory - Center for Wetlands ![]() |
The purpose of this conference is to provide a forum for the synthesis and interpretation of the current status of treatment wetlands. This conference will recognize: the interdisciplinary nature of the topic; the diversity of researchers from scientific and engineering disciplines; the need to synthesize the research information on current understanding of treatment wetlands; the need to transfer basic research information to the managers involved in solving applied problems, and to identify future directions for design and management of treatment wetlands.
The University of Florida is proud to co-host the 7th International Conference on Wetland Systems for Water Pollution Control with the International Water Association (IWA) Specialist Group on the Use of Macrophytes in Water Pollution Control. We invite your participation at this international conference to be held November 11-16, 2000 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

CLICK HERE for detailed Abstract Submission Instructions and online submission.
All papers, oral and poster, will be made available to conference participants as preprint volumes. All manuscripts will be peer reviewed and the best of these will be selected for the refereed publication in Water Science and Technology.
Submission Instructions and online submission.
(Information for those individuals whose abstract is selected for oral
presentation and for poster presenter's
who wish to submit manuscripts.)
Students may qualify for a complimentary registration. The best three oral and the best two poster student abstract presentations will receive a complimentary registration to the conference. Students interested must also submit a manuscript to qualify for the award because selection will be based on the manuscript.
The OEW is a 500 ha ecologically engineered wetland designed to treat reclaimed water and provide wildlife habitat. During the tour, guides will discuss the project history, engineering, construction, and operations. A tour of the effluent structure will also include discussions on water quality results and other related topics. The Orange County ESA, an experimental wetlands system, is a 150 ha wetland engineered to function as a shallow overland flow treatment system, to blend and merge with the existing forested wetlands. The trip will include a description of AWT reclaimed water facility, and a visit to constructed wetlands, natural forested wetlands and surface water discharge.
The tour will take place Sunday, November 12th and will be from approximately 8:00am-5:00pm. The registration fee includes transportation to both sites, refreshment breaks and boxed lunch at Christmas Park. Space is limited, therefore registration will be first come, first served.
Return to IndexThe Everglades is widely recognized as an ecosystem of international importance. Increased total phosphorus (TP) loading and changes in the natural hydroperiod have dramatically altered the composition of plant communities and disrupted food chains in portions of this system. The ENRP, a prototype treatment wetland (i.e., Stormwater Treatment Area [STA]), covers 1,545 ha (3,818 acres) and is currently the largest constructed wetland in the United States. Located approximately 290 km (175 miles) from the conference site, the ENRP was built on former cropland and is designed to treat agricultural drainage water before it enters the Everglades. Research conducted in the ENRP has played a vital role in documenting the wetland’s overall nutrient removal performance and in characterizing other important wetland physical and chemical parameters.Visit the following website for the field trip location.
The tour will take place Friday, November 17th and will be from approximately 7:00am-7:00pm. Part of the tour will include walking up a 25-foot observation tower and walking short distances along gravel roads. Since the facility is not open to the public, no accommodations for wheelchairs or walkers are available. The registration fee includes transportation, refreshment breaks and a boxed lunch. Space is extremely limited, therefore registration will be first come, first served.
