Message from the Coordinator

Dear Master Gardener:
The University of Florida and the Florida Master Gardener Program are excited to host the 2001 International Master Gardener Conference and Trade Show “The Magic of Gardening.” We are eager to welcome you to the Sunshine State and show you some southern hospitality.
The Conference and Trade Show will be held May 28-June 1, 2001 at the Hilton in the Walt Disney World® Resort. There will be nationally recognized speakers such as Rebecca Kolls, René van Rems, Ric Mikula and many others. Choose from numerous educational sessions and hands-on workshops covering a wide range of subjects certain to “spark your interest.” A trade show highlighting horticultural products will also let you see some of the new gadgets for gardeners.
The conference is being held during the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival, an annual event highlighted by millions of flowers, fanciful topiaries and educational presentations delivered by University of Florida faculty, Disney horticulturists and experts from around the country. The conference agenda includes a “special” day at Epcot. A nominal fee will provide you with a two hour early entrance into the World Showcase portion of Epcot and a self-guided walking tour of the International Flower and Garden Festival. From 11:30am-12:15pm, a Great American Gardener Educational Presentation will feature Ric Mikula, author of “The Family Butterfly Book.” The rest of the day is on your own at Epcot. That evening, end the night with a bang at Epcot’s French Island, where we have reserved a private dessert reception for you with front row viewing of the evening finale, the All New IlluminNations: Reflections of Earth.
Don’t miss the conference everyone will be talking about for years to come. As the Master Gardener coordinator for Florida, I am confident the 2001 “The Magic of Gardening” International Master Gardener Conference and Trade Show will be a treat for everyone attending.
See you in Orlando!

Special Events and Speakers

Welcome Reception

Come enjoy an evening of dancing to the sounds of Swing at the welcome reception on Tuesday, May 29. The band, Swingerhead, is one of the most dynamic musical entertainers on the national circuit today. Led by acclaimed singer and former band leader of New York City’s Rainbow Room, Swingerhead plays music ranging from the best swingin’ standards of our century to their own collection of popular swing and jump blues songs. The evening will be fun, and one you will not want to miss.

Florida Master Gardener Meeting &Awards Dinner

The Meeting & Awards dinner is for the Florida Master Gardeners only. Buses are provided to transport you to this special awards dinner held in Epcot at the American Adventure Pavilion. Come join us to honor our fellow Master Gardeners for their achievements and commitment. The guest speaker will be Dennis Higbie, Technical Director, Disney’s Horticulture.

Thursday Dinner & Entertainment

We will have a special performance by an internationally recognized ambassador of the floral industry, René van Rems. Through his lectures, design demonstrations and efforts on behalf of the trade groups and associations, there is an increased level of awareness and knowledge of floral consumption at both the wholesale, retail and consumer levels. Both René and his work have been covered on national television, particularly for his European influence on trends in American floral design.

Friday at Epcot

Friday’s activities start early, with busing to Epcot at 8:30am. The day begins with a self-paced, two-hour walking tour to view the Flower Festival. At 11:30am, we will have a private speaker, Ric Mikula, at the American Gardens Theater. When this lecture concludes, you will have the rest of the day on your own to see Epcot at your leisure. At 7:30pm we will meet again for an exclusive event which include a “delectable desserts” reception and gives you a front row view of the evening fireworks finale, The All New IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth. This spectacular nighttime show has a high-energy soundtrack, sky-piercing lasers and thunderous fireworks sure to amaze all who watch. The skies above transform into a kaleidoscope of colorful pyrotechnic bursts as comets streak across the sky. Images across a giant sphere tell Earth’s tale, then, the sphere blossoms like a flower exposing a brilliant ball of fire as the event comes to an end. Buses will transport you back to the hotel beginning at 9:30pm following the event. Transportation is provided for registered Gardener Conference participants and their paid guests.

Trade Show Exposition

A trade show featuring products, equipment and techniques used in the gardening industry will be held in conjunction with the conference. The educational agenda coupled with an effective and diverse trade show has become an eagerly anticipated event. Featured Key Note -- Rebecca Kolls

A native of Salt Lake City, Rebecca Kolls developed her appreciation for gardening as a young girl. Her fascination with nature led her to pursue a degree in atmospheric science from the University of Kansas. Rebecca launched her career as a meteorologist in Salt Lake City and it was in Utah that her passion for the outdoors blossomed. She became a certified Master Gardener through the University of Utah. Using meteorology as an opportunity to educate a wider audience, her nightly television forecasts began to include helpful gardening hints. We are very fortunate and grateful to have Rebecca Kolls as our keynote speaker.

Wednesday Workshops

In order for Master Gardeners to have the opportunity to participate in the workshop of their choice, all workshops are offered four times, once during each time slot. Participants may choose two workshops to attend on a first-come, first-served basis. Some workshops will be of more interest than others and will quickly reach their maximum capacity. Please be sure to indicate on the Master Gardener registration form which workshops you would like to attend by marking 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices for each time slot. Refer to pages 6-7 in the brochure for workshop descriptions. If your first choice is not available, you will automatically be assigned your next available selection. Click the link below for a printable PDF file listing workshop identifications, times and descriptions.

Search for Excellence
Oral Presentation and Poster Information

Part of the fun and learning at the 2001 IMG Conference & Trade Show in Orlando, Florida will focus on the theme - The Magic of Gardening. Many volunteers have accomplished Magical results in their innovative programs and ideas. The conference will provide our volunteers with time to share the best of today’s skills and tools with the rest of your colleagues.

Our Search for Excellence program will provide an opportunity for Master Gardeners to learn from the experts - your fellow Master Gardeners! A judging committee will be looking for outstanding examples of new educational programs, newly developed teaching tools and new ideas, concepts and approaches to Master Gardening.

Abstracts for both Oral and Poster Presentations and are now being requested from Master Gardeners who have developed successful programs. While suitable abstracts of all applicants will be included in our Magical Gardening CD-ROM Proceedings, we are looking for those magical efforts that will be invited to share their talents with conference participants.

  1. Each county Master Gardener Group may enter each category only one time. Enter as many categories as you would like, but one entry per category.

  2.
  3. The project or activity must have been active during the following dates for consideration:  September 1999 - March 2001.  Ongoing projects could have been active prior to this time, as long as they continued during the specified period.

Types of Invited Presentations
Search for Excellence Oral Presentations are scheduled at this year’s IMG Conference & Trade Show from Thursday, May 31, 2001 1:00pm – 2:00pm. A panel of judges will review all abstract submissions from around the globe, and invite presenters to come to the Conference and share their knowledge and skills with participants. Eight selected presentations will each have 15 minutes to share their outstanding ideas. Two presentations from each of the four categories below will be chosen to present their magic.
Search for Excellence Poster Presentations will also be displayed during the conference. Posters are graphic displays that encourage informal discussions on topics similar to those appropriate for the Search for Excellence presentations. A 4’ x 4’ display panel will be provided for each invited poster. Abstracts for poster presentations will also be included in the conference CD-ROM Proceedings.

Presentation Categories
Oral and Poster Presentations should focus on one of the four categories:
Youth Gardening Programs: Many Master Gardeners work with 4-H members, Junior Master Gardeners, community youth gardens, schools, and even those kids that live down the street. What kind of “magic wand” have your Master Gardeners used to help nurture America’s budding gardeners?
Special Audiences: Many Master Gardeners have taken their love of plants to others that have special needs, e.g. the elderly, limited resource audiences, those that are physically or mentally challenged, or the infirm. What kinds of magic have you found to meet these special needs?
Demonstration Gardens or Landscape Programs: Many of your fellow Master Gardeners have transformed weedy patches into outdoor learning centers that benefit their community or region. Describe how the magical successes of your green thumbs have created new centers for hometown horticulture.
Horticultural Teaching Tools: Many Master Gardeners have a magical ability to share their talents on paper, through audiovisual presentations, in the mass media, and even through demonstrated mastery of computer and Internet technology. Show us your high impact newsletter, marketing brochure, insect collection, or even your web page and tell us how it has enhanced Master Gardening in your community.
