Introduction

Diseases of Warmwater Fish is an intensive two-week class designed to provide instruction in the methodology of diagnosis and treatment of parasitic, bacterial, viral, nutritional, and environmental diseases of warm water food fish and aquarium species. This course is open to students, veterinarians, fisheries biologists, aquaculturists, and professional aquarists. Enrollment is limited and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Course Information and Equipment Requirements

Students are asked to provide their own compound microscopes if possible. A limited number of microscopes will be available for student use, but those students who are able to bring a microscope are requested to do so. Dissecting equipment and other supplies will be provided. The text Fish Disease: Diagnosis and Treatment by Dr. Ed Noga (Iowa State University Press) is strongly recommended. An in-house library will be available, but students are asked to bring Dr. Noga’s book if possible.

The course will be held at two consecutive locations. The first week (June 7-11) will be at the University of Florida’s Tropical Aquaculture Laboratory located in Ruskin, Florida (near Tampa). The second week (June 11-18) will be at The Whitney Laboratory, located south of St. Augustine. The last day (June 18) will be held at Sea World of Florida in Orlando. It is recommended that students traveling by air should fly into Tampa International Airport and depart from Orlando International Airport. Transportation will be provided to all field trips and changes of venue on June 11 and June 18.
