Advanced Fish Medicine is an intensive six-day
course that will provide instruction in the most recent and advanced
procedures associated with clinical fish health management. The course
will emphasize a “hands-on” approach to many of the latest techniques
including anesthesia, hematology, nutritional therapy, imaging,
histopathology and surgery. The primary goal is to encourage
practitioners to increase their expertise in clinical fish medicine. The
course is intended for the advanced student who has prior education in
fish diagnostics and health management.
Acceptance into this course is by permission of the
faculty.

workshops at Walt Disney World® and SeaWorld® Orlando, respectively.
Lectures and laboratory exercises will be conducted at the University of
Florida in Gainesville, Florida. (Round-trip transportation between

General Class Information |
Class Structure
In general,
the course will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Lunch will vary from 45
minutes to an hour and 15 minutes depending on time constraints of
travel, etc.
One evening
(Wednesday November 14) is available for students to present their own
cases to the class and ask for feedback from faculty and classmates
about cases of concern.
Grading
Grading of this pass/fail class
will be based on timely attendance, class and hands-on lab
participation, and practical and clinical knowledge.
Facilities
Facility tours that provide a
working knowledge of husbandry are considered integral for any
individual working in aquatic animal medicine. Organizations that have
graciously agreed to allow access to their facilities for training and behind the
scenes tours include The Seas at Walt Disney World Epcot Center,
Disney’s Animal Kingdom and SeaWorld Orlando.

Acceptance
into Advanced Fish Medicine will be competitive and decisions will be
based on the applicant’s academic record and experience in fish medicine
or aquaculture. Participation is limited to 25 registrants. Two slots
are available, so applications will be accepted until the course fills.
Please follow these
steps to register:

At least one of the two
training and experience boxes must be filled out in Step 1 of the
registration form to proceed.
-
There are three payment
options listed on Step 3 of the form. Please enter your information.
NOTE: Credit card charges are not processed until you are accepted
into the course.

Once you complete all 3
steps, a Registration Confirmation will appear on your screen. You
may print it via the printable view link (upper right). This
confirmation is also sent to your email address for your records.
-
All completed
registration forms will be forwarded to the Course Organizer, Dr.
Ruth Francis-Floyd for approval.

If you registered by
August 31, you should receive an email by Friday, September 7, 2007
regarding your status.
-
Registrations received
after August 31 will receive notification within a week of applying.

If your registration is
accepted, credit card payment will be promptly processed. Those who are not
accepted will be removed from the system.

Check payment must be
received by Monday, October 8, 2007 to retain a seat in the course.

After October 8, any
available seats will be given to prospective students that have been
placed on the waiting list.

What does the Registration Fee include? The Advanced Fish
Medicine registration fee provides each participant the educational
program, admittance to all field trips, transportation to field trips
and to/from Gainesville, Welcome Social on Sunday, lunches and
refreshment breaks Monday-Friday, lab supplies, T-shirt, mug and ring
binder containing course handouts.
Refund Policy: Requests for registration refunds will be honored
if written notice of cancellation is received by the Office of
Conferences and Institutes on or before Friday, October 5, 2007. A
$250.00 processing fee will be deducted from attendee refunds and $50
from UF student refunds. No refunds will be honored for cancellations
after October 5, 2007.
Special Needs: Participants with special needs can be reasonably
accommodated by contacting the Office of Conferences & Institutes at
least 10 working days prior to the short course. We can be reached by

On
Monday, November 12, 2007, there will be training and a behind-the-scenes tour of
Veterinary Hospitals and Aquaria at Disney’s Animal Kingdom® and The
Seas in Epcot® in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Animal Kingdom® is 500
acres of exotic landscapes containing over 4 million plants, trees and
grasses. In the lush landscape of the Oasis is a 3,500-gallon aquarium
displaying tropical fish species. The Seas is the largest inland ocean
facility in the world. It holds six million gallons of ocean water and
contains more than 3,500 fish representing 85 species.

the lecture at SeaWorld® Orlando on Saturday, November 17, 2007 please

The College of Veterinary Medicine at UF is part of both the Health

Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). It is Florida’s only
veterinary college, offering comprehensive service to the public through

It is recommended that students traveling by air should fly into and
depart from Orlando International Airport.
Transportation will be provided to and from the preferred hotels to all course lectures, field
trips, and venue changes on Tuesday, June 12 and Friday, June 15. There
is no need to rent a car. However, you will need to take a shuttle or
cab service from the airport to the Homewood Suites on Sunday and from SeaWorld to the airport on Saturday.
