About Toronto

Appropriately for our purposes, the word "Toronto" is a Native American word for "meeting place." Formally, this multicultural area boasting 80 ethnic groups speaking 100 languages calls itself "The world within a city." Informally, the area is known as "like New York, but safer."

The 2001 ACE/NETC conference will take place in the heart of the theater district in downtown Toronto, known for its 300 theatrical companies and 70 stages. In fact, Toronto can boast that it's the world's third-largest theater center (after New York and London).

Meeting Site

Our breakout sessions and workshops have been moved to Jorgenson Hall on the Ryerson University campus. It is located just one block from the hotel. This is the facility Ryerson uses for Continuing Education classes. Ten classrooms have been reserved for our use, five of the rooms will have internet connection. We will be using two computer labs, one for some of our members to present hands-on sessions, and the other for Ryerson faculty to presents the four "workshops". We will still be holding our "Film Festival" in the Eaton Theater located in the Rogers Communication Centre.

Important Travel Information

Passport/Visa Requirements
Visitors from the United States need proof of U.S. citizenship (passports or birth certificates for you and your children, together with photo ID). U.S. citizens not yet age 18 must present a letter from their parents giving permission to enter Canada. U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid passport.

Australians and citizens of the U.K. need a passport and proof of onward passage. No visa needed for up to six months.

Citizens of other countries must have a valid passport, and a visa may be required. Direct questions about entry into Canada to your local Canadian Embassy/Consulate.

If you need a passport, you are urged to start the process soon.

Canadian Custom Information

Canadian Customs would like your visit to Canada to be a wonderful and memorable experience. To help with your travel arrangements, please visit the Canadian Customs web site. The site contains  information on Personal Baggage and Entitlements, Gifts, travel from other countries besides the US, and much more.

Getting There by Air

A listing of airlines that service the Pearson Airport can be found at the Airport Webport site below. Once you have selected an airline, be sure to ask that carrier's baggage weight and size limitations. Each carrier has different limits and may charge a hefty fee for anything over sized.

Transportation in Canada

Travel time from the Pearson International Airport to the Delta Chelsea is approximately 45 minutes. The Airport Express offers shuttle transportation to the Delta Chelsea leaving every 30 minutes. The Airport Express can be found in each of the three terminals at the airport. One way fare is currently $13.75CAN, round-trip $23.65CAN (prices subject to change). No advance reservation is needed.

Toronto has a wonderful public transportation system. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) provides mass transit for the entire Metro area. Regular TTC service runs every day 6 a.m. (9 a.m. on Sundays) until 1:30 a.m. Tokens and tickets are available at the stations and at select retail outlets around the city. Single trips or cash fare is $2 and discounts are offered for children, students and seniors. For more information about TTC services, including bus routes and streetcars, pick up a Ride Guide at any subway ticket booth or visit their website: http://www.city.toronto.on.ca/ttc/

Budget Car Rental is offering a ACE/NETC participants a special conference rate for those who are interested in renting a vehicle. The base weekly cost for a mid size car will be $264CAN with unlimited mileage. (Taxes, insurance, surcharges will be additional.) Budget Car Rental has locations in each of the terminals at the Pearson International Airport and also with walking distance of the Delta Chelsea. All ACE/NETC conference participants will be sent a Budget Car Rental voucher with their registration confirmation.

Voltage Requirements

Voltage is 110 volts. U.S. appliances can be used without converters; visitors from other countries will probably need to bring an adapter.

Tax
Sales or Use Tax Provincial sales tax (8%) and federal goods and services tax (7%) apply to most goods and services. Rebates of the 7% GST are available for those visiting less than a month (get forms from duty-free shops at the border and at airports offering departures from Canada).

Time Zone
Toronto is in the Eastern Standard Time zone. Daylight Savings Time is observed during the summer months.

Currency
One- and two-dollar bills have been replaced by coins. The brass-colored one-dollar coin is known affectionately as "the loonie" because of the loon depicted on it. More irreverently, the two-toned two-dollar coin is known as "the toonie."

Canadian currency is not at par with that of the U.S. At press time, the exchange rate was Can $0.95 for one Australian dollar, Can $2.44 for one British pound sterling, and Can $1.49 for one U.S. dollar.

Currency Exchange: It's economically advantageous to convert U.S. dollars to Canadian dollars. Plus, U.S. dollars are not generally accepted except for restaurant or taxi tips. Exchange rates are better away from the airport; banks generally offer the best rates. ATMs are the most convenient and best way to get smaller amounts of cash. They are widely available in the downtown core. ATMs accept some major foreign bank cards (and credit cards if you obtain a PIN prior to travel). Canadian dollars are dispensed at the going rate of exchange. Using a debit card, your financial institution will charge a small ATM fee, but you avoid paying the larger commissions charged by Bureaux de Change. However, don't rely on just one debit or credit card to obtain cash. Sometimes a card, inexplicably, won't work in an ATM.
